Chapter Seven

Avery

Whoever is writing the script of my life sure knows how to throw in a plot twist. What was supposed to be a quiet night back at our home, the first under our roof as man and wife, we spend with Police Chief Hammond and Officer Brody Taylor listening to Matt Walker tell his crazy story about Preenie hiring a hitman to kill him.

“I was at Sugar’s, where I normally am on Wednesdays with the guys, shooting some pool.” Matt’s face is a ruin of bruises, a little trickle of blood runs down his nose. “Anyway, I run into a little action.”

He tries to wink at the officers but winces instead. “Anyway, Frank doesn’t like us doing stuff like that in the bar. So, I take her out back, you know. Before she can get my dick out, I get whacked over the head. Lights out.”

“When I come to, I’m blindfolded. My hands are tied. I’m in the backseat of a car. At first, I thought the girl set me up to be robbed. Then I hear them arguing."

"Who?" asks Officer Hammond.

“Preenie and someone else.”

“You sure?” This time Brody asks the question.

“Think I don’t know what my own wife sounds like, Officer?” Matt spits at Brody’s feet.

I see Maisie’s mouth twist in disgust.

“You’ll keep doing that if you want a black eye to go along with those marks on your neck,” Brody warns.

“Yeah, yeah. Class act as usual, Taylor.”

Says the guy who just spat on the floor.

“So, anyway,” Matt continues, “I hear her arguing with this guy, right. She actually asks him, why the fuck did he bring me to her. He was supposed to dump the body. She wasn’t supposed to be involved.”

Matt coughs for a spell and returns to his tale. “He tells her, he wanted her to be sure that she really wanted to do this. She asks, ‘you mean he’s not dead?’.”

Here, Matt rubs his throat and asks for a glass of water, which he gets. He takes a few gulps before going on.

“Then, she gets really mad.” Matt starts to laugh. For a man who came so close to dying, he’s in a remarkably good humor. “Starts cursing him out, calling him a stupid fuck.”

Matt dissolves into a fit of laughter again. Hammond and Brody wait him out. “I only hope he didn’t do this with the hope of replacing me. He’ll find out soon enough, he’s getting the worse end of the bargain.”

“What happened after that?” Hammond asks, trying to keep him on point.

“Our guy drives me to a spot in the woods. Thinks I’m still out. Only I’m not. I’ve managed to loosen the bonds enough to get my hands out. When he comes round back to get me, I put up a real fight. He drops me and I get on my feet, pull the blindfold off, and I’m out of there.”

He stops as though gathering his strength to tell the next part. Both his tone and expression chill me. “He catches up with me and beats the shit out of me.
